China’s Five Elements Philosophy — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water

Five Elements Theory is a Chinese philosophy used to describe interactions and relationships between things. The five elements — wood, fire, earth, metal, and water — are believed to be the fundamental elements of everything in the universe between which interactions occur.

Five Element Theory asserts that the world changes according to the five elements’ creation, subjugation, anti subjugation or anti creation relationships. The Five element principle is a metaphysical order of the universe. In the human body it is the metaphysical basis and composing part of the individual organism. It is a force that retains a certain order and determines the sequence of interaction within the body and mind.

All phenomena in the macrocosm may be classified into five metaphysical categories as five elements. In the macrocosm a human being may be viewed as a miniature universe- a microcosmos, to which all basic fundamental metaphysical conceptions may be applied. So, the human body consists of elements of five different categories.

The concepts wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water describe certain traits pertaining to each category of the five elements. All events and objects in the universe may be classified into one of the Five elements categories. The six ki that have existed from the beginning of time also correspond to one of the five elements.

Six Ki is one dimension through which the five elements principle manifest itself. The universe is full of Six Ki, they surround us and exist inside of our bodies. The Six Ki affects our mind and body, can make us healthy or sick. When the Six Ki are well harmonized and in balance, the individual enjoys a state of health, but when they are out of balance and in a state of disharmony, disease develops.

The Six Ki are Wind, Heat, Hotness, Humidity, Dryness and Coldness. There is no life on the Sun due to an imbalance of Six Ki: Heat and Wind Six Ki dominate. There is also no life on the moon, as the disharmony of Six Ki is caused by the absence of Wind energy. When there is no harmony, there can be no life. On the earth the Six Ki are balanced and thus, human beings may exist.

The Six Ki not only surround and circulate through the human being, they are a fundamental element in forming the human body and mind as an integral vital organism.

That is why it is more convenient to view the healthy and diseased state from the perspective of the Six Ki, than from the Five elements perspective. For example, it is easy to see the impairment of movement as a symptom of Wind disbalance. At the same time trying to interpret this symptom using the concept Wood of the Five elements gives no understanding.

Six Ki is Professor Park’s groundbreaking upgrade of the age-old Chinese philosophy of Five Elements. Six Ki, as the name suggests, talks about six energies which are- Wind, Heat, Hotness, Humidity, Dryness & Coldness.

WHY WE MOVED FROM 5 ELEMENTS THEORY TO SIX KI?

Six Ki constititution

Earlier there was a 5 elements theory. Traditional books describe the meridian theory and 5 element theory as a separate entity. In Chinese philosophy there is Yin/Yang theory, 5 Yin and 5 Yang, so it comes to 10 energies. There are 12 meridians and we cannot explain 10 energies with 12 meridians. In 5 elements 2 energies Heat and Hotness were in the same group.

Pericardium and Triple warmer meridian come under Hotness energy. From ancient text “Shin Po” was translated into French as “Pericardium”. It consists of two characters and the first character has two meanings: the first meaning is “heart” and the second “mind”. The meaning of the second character is “surround” or “keep something in secret”. So, the interpreter used only one meaning of the first character and it became “Pericardium” which means “surrounding the heart”. If the interpreter would have used the second meaning, the second translation will be “what surrounds the mind” or “what keeps the mind secret”, which in reality points to the Brain. It is logical to assume that thoughts existing on a metaphysical level, should manifest themselves in some way on a physical level. So, the brain is the physical entity of thought and mind.

The Triple warmer is also defined by two characters. The first character means “three” and the second “get burnt by fire” or “have a burn”. This points to the fact that the triple warmer belongs to Hotness energy and makes the human body full of Hot spirit.

According to the Yin- Yang principle the brain, as a metaphysical yin organ, must have a pair- a metaphysical yang organ. The yang organ is the Spinal cord.

At this juncture, Prof. Park pointed out that heat and hotness were different energies, which were expressed as one in theory of 5 elements and 6 ki theory expressed heat and hotness as different energies. Hotness energy is the controlling element, so six yin and six yang become 12 energies. This way we can explain 12 meridians and Six-ki.

There is a missing link in five element theory. Professor explained that in any system there should be a controlling element. In 5 elements the controlling element was missing. In 5 elements there is subjugation and anti-subjugation, it means one energy is controlling some other energy and there is no harmonization which is not good from spirituality point of view.

In 5 elements theory we have 10 axes. In six-ki we Have 15 axes, So In Six-ki we have more options.

The axial relation in six-ki is also present in our body. Such as Heart and Lungs, LI and SI, Liver and Spleen, Brain and Kidney, so in comparison to 5 element theory six-ki is more prevalent. Six-ki is also harmonizing our body.

In six-ki hotness is the physical controlling and brightness & darkness are spiritual controllers in eight-ki. First five elements then six-ki and then eight-ki was gradually developed due to limitations in each theory.

What is Axis- a real or imaginary line about which a body can rotate or about which an object, form, composition, or geometrical construction is symmetrical. It’s a bond for energy exchange. For exchange of energy to exist in an axis, there must be some differences and there must be some similarities.

SIMILARITIES AND DIS-SIMILARITIES BETWEEN ENERGIES/ORGANS

ENERGY / ORGAN SIMILARITIES DISSIMILARITIES
WIND & HUMIDITY Starting of Hetero and starting of Homo  Different functions
HEAT & DRYNESS Active Hetero and active Homo  Different functions
HOTNESS & COLDNESS Max. Hetero and max. Homo  Different functions
LIVER & SPLEEN Located on  same level, physiologically they are interconnected (blood destruction, bilirubin metabolism) -strong axis Liver is large, Spleen is small, Liver has lobes, Spleen has no lobes
GALL BLADDER & STOMACH In same axis, hollow organ GB has one opening but stomach has two openings. Two is Ho, one is Hetero
HEART AND LUNGS In same level- Physically, cardiovascular, circulatory system blood purification, oxygen intake carbon dioxide elimination- are interconnected  Lungs is two (Ho) Heart is one (He), Lungs is big, Heart is small.
SI & LI Same axis, digestive system, tube like form, hollow organ SI is bigger in length  (He phenomena) and  LI is shorter (Ho phenomena) – LI is Broad, SI is Narrow.
BRAIN & KIDNEY Same axis, internal brain structure and internal kidney structure are ideally same- brain  has neuron and kidney has nephrons . Brain and spinal cord is connected and kidney and UB are connected Brain two lobes are joined, two kidney are separated.

Role of Neutro Force in axial relationship-

Hotness and coldness– Between Brain and Kidney, there is a vertical axis. Brain is hetero, there are so many nerves etc. but it is closed because of harmonization by Neutro force . Kidney is homo but it is separated because of neutro force. So neutro force always exists to harmonize.

In Lungs and Heart- Lungs are homo because they are two. Heart is hetero because one. But hetero organ is inside lungs & homo organs are outside because of neutro force.LI is homo organ. SI is hetero organ, LI is outside and SI is inside. Body is built up with triorigin conciousness.

Liver & Spleen- Liver is hetero (wind) spleen is homo (IV) but liver is at right side (homo side). Spleen is homo organ but it is in left (hetero side) because of neutro force. Same with GB & Stomach

Neutro force come to harmonize too much hetero & too much homo. So in our body neutro force exists.

Hence, Six ki, Prof. Park ground breaking upgradation of the age old Chinese philosophy of Five elements, adds logic & reason to the treatment protocol. This enables the therapist to gain clear consciousness, developing greater confidence & multiplying the intention of curing by many folds. This crucial transition from the five element theory to the Six  ki principles is a must for all Sujok practitioners.

Come, Let us all upgrade ourselves with the Six ki consciousness.

Smile Thanks.
